Dr. Keith Carter is the Lillian C. O'Brien and Dr. C.S. O'Brien Chair in Ophthalmology and Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Carter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, and a fellowship in oculoplastics and orbital surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has been a faculty member at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics since 1988, having served as the residency program director for 14 years (1992-2006) and appointed Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in January 2006. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Nationally, Dr. Carters is past president of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology. He currently serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee for the Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring Program.
Dr. Carter has served the profession in surgical education, working on curriculum and wet labs to improve the surgical skills of residents and fellows. He has educated and trained more than 20 oculoplastic fellows and countless residents.
He considers it a privilege to represent the surgical subspecialties on the ACGME Board of Directors.
