Dr. Pence joined the ACGME in spring 2015 as Senior Vice President, Osteopathic Accreditation, overseeing the staff that supports the Osteopathic Principles Committee and the Review Committee for Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Dr. Pence comes to the ACGME from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM), where he served as Vice President of Graduate Medical Education and Rural Outreach, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean, Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education, and Professor of Family Medicine. He also served as the Academic Officer and Chair of the Board of the Mountain State OPTI (MSOPTI). Prior to that, he was the Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, and Northwest CORE Assistant Dean of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Pence was previously the Interim Director of Osteopathic Medical Education/Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program Director for the Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency and the Osteopathic Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Director of Osteopathic Medical Education/Osteopathic Family Medicine Program Director at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte, West Virginia. During his tenure as Academic Officer of MSOPTI, Dr. Pence was responsible for the development of an AOA-accredited Teaching Health Center that was one of the first 11 Teaching Health Centers funded by the US Department of Health Resources and Services Administration.
Dr. Pence has served on many national committees and task forces within the osteopathic profession, including as chair of the AOA Council on Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions (COPTI). He has also served as a member of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Board of Deans, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians’ CEE Committee, the Robert C. Byrd Clinic Board, the West Virginia Medical Professional Health Program Board, and the Center for Rural Health Development, Inc. Board.
Dr. Pence graduated from WVSOM, and completed his family medicine residency in Toledo, Ohio. He is board certified in family medicine. His experience includes solo and group practice in rural, inner city, and urban environments. He completed an AOA Health Policy Fellowship from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has many professional interests, including health policy, rural medicine, and physician access/placement.
