Transitions in Medical Education
Overview
The COVID-19 global pandemic has disrupted almost all aspects of life. Medical education has been no exception, but through it all, the medical education community has exhibited remarkable innovation and resilience. Throughout the crisis, medical students, residents, and fellows have selflessly provided care for patients, oftentimes sacrificing elements of their own professional development, while deepening care to others. These transition toolkits are offered as resources to help support learners at specific stages in their career.
Transition to Residency
The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), ACGME, and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates | Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (ECFMG|FAIMER) have updated the toolkit shared in 2021 to assist in the transition of 2022 medical school graduates into their first year of residency. Resources are provided to assist incoming residents, as well as programs and faculty members, in supporting their transition.
Transition to Fellowship
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), ACGME, and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) partnered to develop a toolkit, based on the Transition to Residency toolkit, with guidance and resources for incoming residents, programs, and faculty members to support the transition of residents graduating in 2022 and transitioning to their first year of fellowship education.
Transition to Clinical Practice
The ABMS, ACGME, and AOA also developed a toolkit of guidance and resources to assist residents, fellows, programs, and faculty members in supporting residents and fellows graduating in 2022 and transitioning into practice.
