#ACGME2024 Full-Day Courses Set the Tone for a Meaningful Conference Experience
The ACGME Annual Educational Conference has always included both general interest graduate medical education (GME) sessions and focused sessions for specific audiences.
Pre-conferences were previously historically scheduled the day before the full conference began, but in 2023, Full-Day Courses on topics of interest to specific audiences were offered for the first time at no additional cost as part of attendees’ registration. The Full-Day Courses all take place on Thursday, March 7.
In 2024, the Full-Day Course schedule has expanded to six areas, with content curated specifically for distinctive audiences, and attendees can select the course most appropriate to their role when they register. Each Full-Day Course offers participants the best of both worlds, allowing attendees to benefit from detailed sessions in their area of interest and to network with colleagues specific to their roles before joining others in the broader conference sessions. Following are high-level summaries of each of the six Full-Day Courses available.
Insights into the Accreditation Process: A Course for Program Directors
This annual Full-Day Course for program directors provides program directors the opportunity to learn more about the accreditation process. Topics include general information about the ACGME, the Review Committees, and the accreditation review process, as well as about ACGME data collection. Compliance with the Common Program Requirements is also covered, as is information about the Clinical Competency Committee, assessment of residents/fellows, and program evaluation. The course will include didactic presentations and the opportunity for participants to ask questions. There will be a session on applications for program leaders starting a new program, in the US or internationally.
ACGME/AOGME Osteopathic Recognition Full-Day Course
Developed by the ACGME in partnership with the Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME), this Full-Day Course is designed for programs with and that may consider applying for ACGME Osteopathic Recognition. In the first part of the course, general sessions will allow attendees to hear and learn directly from Directors of Osteopathic Education (DOEs), osteopathic faculty members, and designated osteopathic residents from programs with ACGME Osteopathic Recognition. The second part of the course, which will be delivered by Osteopathic Recognition Committee leaders and staff members, is intended to provide attendees with insight into the recognition process and to enhance understanding of the Osteopathic Recognition Requirements.
For this course, American Medical Association CME (AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM) credit will be provided by the ACGME, and American Osteopathic Association CME will be provided by the AOGME.
Full-Day Course for Designated Institutional Officials (DIOs)
Designed for both new and experienced DIOs, this Full-Day Course features interactive learning activities focused on the roles and responsibilities of the DIO. Attendees will participate in discussions centered on overseeing ACGME-accredited programs and ensuring compliance with ACGME requirements. Sessions will also emphasize the DIO’s emerging role as a health systems leader. In addition, DIOs will also have opportunities to support, share, and learn from their peers. Attendees will walk away with new skills to apply to their roles as institutional leaders with increasing responsibility for the integration of GME and the clinical learning environment.
Advancing Outcomes-Based Research in Medical Education
Designed for medical educators and researchers, this Full-Day Course will focus on putting to use evidence-based educational research to support learners’ professional development and program improvement. Attendees will leave with an action plan to improve their own GME programs and advance competency-based medical education (CBME). Building on the first iteration of the course at the 2023 Annual Educational Conference, the 2024 course will use a combined theory-burst, evidence-sharing, and application workshop format. Each section of the course will begin with a brief evidence-based burst of key lessons and insights from the most recent advances in educational and clinical outcomes research. Each evidence burst will be presented and moderated by experts in GME who have developed the evidence, and more importantly, applied the findings in their own education and training initiatives. Each theory burst and evidence-sharing section will be followed by small group work on translating the findings for improvements in the attendees’ own program. This course will address how programs and institutions can advance educational improvement by using various types of outcomes data, such as clinical and patient safety indicators, patient observations, work-based assessments, and Milestones to improve educational outcomes for all learners.
Program and Institutional Strategies for Inclusive Learning Environments
This new Full-Day Course is designed for GME and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leaders interested in learning skills and strategies for increasing resident, fellow, and faculty member recruitment and retention, as well as creating inclusive environments. With both didactive and active learning, attendees will understand the intersection of trauma and DEI work; learn strategies for developing organizational capacity while managing resistance; learn how to effectively use the published resources in the ACGME Equity Matters™ Resource Collection; and apply knowledge in small group strategy sessions. A variety of tools will be provided for attendees to use both during and after the course.
Coordinator Forum: Navigating with Confidence
The 14th annual Coordinator Forum will feature a full day of sessions designed for new and experienced institutional and program coordinators to gain knowledge and network with colleagues. Two plenary sessions will be delivered by experienced administrative leaders and ACGME staff members discussing issues at the forefront in the coordinator community. Attendees will explore two breakout sessions of their choosing on a variety of topics applicable to the coordinator role. Most sessions were selected from submissions from the coordinator community and cover topics related to professional development and best practices. This year’s theme, Navigating with Confidence, emerged from community submissions on helping coordinators find the confidence to excel as administrative leaders and to advocate for the role they were made for. The Coordinator Forum will conclude with a short networking event so that participants can recap the day with new friends and colleagues before continuing to the Marvin R. Dunn Welcoming Poster Reception and Exhibitor Kick-Off.
