NEW! Major Revision of Program Requirements for Neurology and Child Neurology Subspecialties Coming Soon
The Review Committee for Neurology is preparing to begin a major revision of the Program Requirements for the subspecialties of clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disabilities, neuromuscular medicine, and vascular neurology and invites comments related to specific requirements or topics that should be addressed as the revisions are developed. In particular, the Review Committee invites comments related to what the respective subspecialties will look like in the future, and the competencies, resources, and personnel necessary to create physicians who will practice in the subspecialty. Comments should be submitted to Neurology-reviews@acgme.org by Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Changes to the ACGME Common Program Requirements are not within the purview of the Review Committee and, therefore, comments related to Common Program Requirements, indicated by bold font in the Requirements documents, should not be submitted and will not be considered.
NEW! Meet with the Orthopaedic Surgery Executive Director
Orthopaedic surgery program leaders can schedule appointments with Executive Director Corey Parker, MPA at two upcoming events. Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.
The first event is the 78th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand October 3-4, 2023 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Canada.
The second event is the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics 2023 Annual Fall Meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Appointments will be scheduled for Friday, October 6, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Mountain and and Saturday, October 7, from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mountain at The Broadmoor.

Rural Track Questionnaires Added for Obstetrics and Gynecology Programs
Obstetrics and gynecology residency programs applying for a rural track must now complete a supplemental questionnaire. A questionnaire has been created for new programs applying for ACGME accreditation and requesting Rural Track Program (RTP) designation. A second questionnaire and supplemental instructions have been made for existing programs that submit a permanent complement increase request to add a rural track within the program and for those pursuing RTP designation.
The documents are available under the Documents and Resources tab of the Obstetrics and Gynecology section as well as on the Rural Track Program designation web page on the ACGME website.

Case Log Update: Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The Case Log System has been updated to better document fellows’ experiences and more than 40 additional CPT codes are being tracked. Fellows can also now log laser resurfacing of the face (to find this option from the "Area/Type/Code" tab, enter a keyword in the "Code or Keyword" search tool).
Reports will reflect some changes to procedure types, including the addition of “Temporal artery biopsy.” Additionally, the type “Botox” has been renamed “Injectables.” A list of all procedures tracked in the Case Log System is available in ADS (Case Logs > Download/Reports > Tracked Codes).

Case Log System Update: Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery
When logging procedures, residents will now designate whether the procedure was completed with the patient awake/under light sedation or under anesthesia/deep sedation.
Procedures in this specialty are increasingly being completed in an office, emergency department, or operating room with patients awake. Collecting this information will highlight to residents that these procedures are important and should be accounted for in the Case Log System. This will also provide the Review Committee with a better understanding of the resident experience with these types of procedures.

NEW! The ACGME Seeks a Public Member
The following Review Committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2024. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

THIS WEEK! Resident Member Nominations
The following Review and Recognition Committees seek nominations for their next resident members. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship. The Review/Recognition Committee will forward its selection to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. Terms begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2026.

Does the Degree Matter? MD and DO Students Who Match Into OB/GYN Report Different Experiences in US Undergraduate Medical Education

Although allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) medical students have similar curricular requirements, little is known about differences in MD and DO preparedness for obstetrics and gynecology residency. This study concluded that MD students matched to US obstetric and gynecology residency programs reported longer clerkship and more home sub-internships, while DO students reported more hands-on experiences. Despite reporting similar confidence in knowledge and skills, DO students felt less prepared for the first year of residency.

Letters of Notification and Site Visit Announcement Letter Changes
Historically, when the ACGME communicated an accreditation/recognition action or the scheduling of an accreditation/recognition site visit, the Letter of Notification or Site Visit Announcement Letter was posted in the ADS and attached to the email sent to the institution and/or program leadership. As of September 14, 2023, letters are no longer attached to these emails. These letters are posted in ADS, and the email will still provide instructions on how to access the letter in ADS. This change was implemented to increase security and confidentiality.

Remediation Toolkit Available
The ACGME is pleased to launch the ACGME Remediation Toolkit, authored by renowned experts from across the country. The free course is designed to provide educators and administrators in GME the knowledge, tools, and strategies necessary to effectively address the challenges faced by struggling learners in the field.
The course comprises 11 modules covering a range of essential topics related to remediation. These modules will equip educators and administrators with a solid foundation for addressing the needs of struggling learners, implementing effective remediation strategies, and fostering a supportive and conducive learning environment in GME.
The remediation toolkit is part of a suite of materials the ACGME provides to aid in faculty development, including the Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit and the Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course.

MUA/P Interest Group Sessions
The ACGME will hold sessions for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps (places or communities in which groups of people have unmet health or health care needs).
The aim of these interest group sessions is for the community to learn about efforts in GME and MUA/P, to solve for common challenges, and to share helpful knowledge and resources.
