The Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address at the 2024 ACGME Annual Educational Conference will allow attendees to hear the very latest in significant, ongoing research being implemented in graduate medical education (GME). Titled “Improving the Culture of Residency,” the keynote promises to be an insightful journey into the transformative trials that are reshaping the landscape of GME.
Transforming Graduate Medical Education: A Trilogy of Trials
At the forefront of this groundbreaking research is Dr. Karl Y. Bilimoria, chair of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. As a surgical oncologist, researcher, and visionary, Dr. Bilimoria has spearheaded a trilogy of trials that address crucial issues in GME.
The FIRST [Flexibility In duty hour Requirements for Surgical Trainees] Trial, a collaboration among the ACGME, the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery, and the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center at Indiana University School of Medicine, tackled clinical work and education hour policies. The findings from this trial led to significant changes in ACGME requirements, demonstrating the power of evidence-based interventions.
Building on the success of the FIRST Trial, the SECOND [Surgical Education Culture Optimization through targeted interventions based on National comparative Data] Trial, co-led by Dr. Bilimoria and Dr. Yue-Yung Hu from Northwestern University, delved into the critical issue of resident burnout and mistreatment. The insights gained from this trial have not only influenced medical education but have also sparked interest across various specialties and even internationally.
And as we prepare for the conference and await their keynote, Drs. Bilimoria and Hu, with the support of key organizations, are gearing up for the THIRD [Transforming Health with Inclusion and Resident Diversity] Trial. This upcoming trial aims to address the challenges programs face in building inclusive environments, with a focus on improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in surgical departments.
Meet the Visionaries
Dr. Bilimoria's extensive experience in health services, quality improvement, health policy, and medical education research positions him as a trailblazer in the field. As the founding executive director of the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center, he has pioneered innovative surgical education trials, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of medical education.
Dr. Hu is a pediatric surgeon at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and an associate professor at Northwestern University. Dr. Hu's research program focuses on surgical education, inclusive environments, and workforce diversification, contributing significantly to reducing disparities in surgical care delivery.
Dr. Mary E. Klingensmith, who will moderate the presentation, is the associate chief accreditation officer at the ACGME. As a surgeon with extensive experience in surgical education, Dr. Klingensmith's expertise adds a crucial accreditation perspective to the trials. Her commitment to curricular reform, competency-based medical education, and ethical considerations in surgery aligns seamlessly with the ongoing efforts to improve GME.
With this lineup and subject, the 2024 Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address promises to be an informative and inspiring presentation on the evolution of GME. Attendees can expect a comprehensive overview of the findings from the FIRST and SECOND Trials, and to gain actionable insights to drive positive change in GME culture.
As we look toward the future, the THIRD Trial holds the promise of ushering in a new era of diversity, equity, and inclusion in residency. The collaborative efforts of Drs. Bilimoria, Hu, and Klingensmith will reaffirm the commitment to advancing graduate medical education and improving the lives of residents and fellows.
