#ACGME2024 Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address: Improving the Culture of Residency

The FIRST [Flexibility In duty hour Requirements for Surgical Trainees] Trial, a collaboration among the ACGME, the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery, and the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center at Indiana University School of Medicine, tackled clinical work and education hour policies. The findings from this trial led to significant changes in ACGME requirements, demonstrating the power of evidence-based interventions.

Building on the success of the FIRST Trial, the SECOND [Surgical Education Culture Optimization through targeted interventions based on National comparative Data] Trial, co-led by Dr. Bilimoria and Dr. Yue-Yung Hu from Northwestern University, delved into the critical issue of resident burnout and mistreatment.
